5 Best Old School Hip Hop Movies and Music Videos

As a dancer I always look back to these movies and music videos that inspired me to dance hip hop. I consider these clips as classic. Hip hop has evolved so much that we forget about these. As for me, these clips are part of my foundation.

  1. You Got Served (2004)

Who wouldn’t be inspired by Lil Saint? This movie shows the world of street dance where crews battle against each other for bragging rights and money. The story was a little bit dull and cheesy, but who cares? The dance scenes were really great! If you are into hip hop then this movie is down your alley. Shane Sparks from America’s Best Dance Crew and So You Think You Can Dance truly did a good job with this one.

2. Like a Boy by Ciara

Do you sometimes wish that you could dance like a boy? Well, I do and apparently Ciara did as well. Ciara really looked like a badass chick here in this video. Videos like this are the reason why I am not that into girly choreographies (sorry!).

3. Work It by Missy Elliot

I would actually choose almost all the music videos of Missy but Work It will be my number one pick. Have you seen the little girl breakdancing in this video? She’s grown up now and you probably saw her in these movies Step Up, Step Up 3D, and Step Up: All In.

4. Gossip Folks by Missy Elliot

Now you can say that I am a fan of Missy Elliot. If you have seen this video, perhaps you noticed the cute little Asian kid dancing and the girl from Work It music video. I love it when they include kids in videos like these.

Oh! Those two kids in the video, who are grown ups now, recently gave a tribute to Missy Elliot.

5. Ice Box by Omarion

If you’ve seen You Got Served, well you probably recognized the guy who was in this video. I was surprised that Omarion can also sing and I forgot to mention that almost all the songs in You Got Served soundtrack was actually performed by his group as well. What a talented guy he is!
